I’m Carter Smith – photographer slash filmmaker, and ALL THE DEAD BOYS is my deep dive into the world of queer fear and body horror.

I grew up in a small town where being gay felt dangerous. At least as dangerous as the horror movies I loved so much.

Maybe more so.

.

But gay horror wasn’t a thing. There was zero overlap between these two worlds that shaped my identity.

.

.

I left for the big city and traveled the world, taking pretty pictures of famous faces and loving every minute of it.

.

.

But horror never left my heart.

.

And when my first short film BUGCRUSH won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, I realized maybe I wasn’t alone in my love of queer fear.

.

.

For me, queer had always gone hand in hand with fear.

.

.

I started ALL THE DEAD BOYS to explore that murky place where the beautiful and the horrific meet. To tell stories and make images as seductive as they are unsettling.

.

.

To create something that was just for me – without worrying about clients or agencies or making other people happy.

.

What I discovered was the incredible power of truly personal work. Of digging deep, and not averting your eyes at what you find waiting for you.

.

.
